Explicitly Uncoupled Vms Stabilization of Fluid Flow

چکیده

Variational Multiscale Methods have proven to be an accurate and systematic approach to the simulation of turbulent flows. Many turbulent flows are solved by legacy codes or by ones written by a team of programmers and of great complexity so implementing a new approach to turbulence in such cases can be daunting. We propose a new approach to inducing a VMS treatment of turbulence in a legacy code (or any laminar flow code even). The method adds a separate, uncoupled and modular postprocessing step to each time step of the (possibly black box) flow code. We prove stability and convergence for the combination and quantify the VMS dissipation induced. Numerical experiments confirming the theory are given. In particular, the performance of the two step, modular VMS method is fully comparable to a monolithic (fully coupled) VMS method for the benchmark problem of decaying homogeneous turbulence.

Stabilization of Electrostatically Actuated Micro-pipe Conveying Fluid Using Parametric Excitation

This paper investigates the parametric excitation of a micro-pipe conveying fluid suspended between two symmetric electrodes. Electrostatically actuated micro-pipes may become unstable when the exciting voltage is greater than the pull-in value. It is demonstrated that the parametric excitation of a micro-pipe by periodic (ac) voltages may have a stabilizing effect and permit an increase of the...

Coupling Fluid Flow with Porous Media Flow

The transport of substances back and forth between surface water and groundwater is a very serious problem. We study herein the mathematical model of this setting consisting of the Stokes equations in the fluid region coupled with the Darcy equations in the porous medium, coupled across the interface by the Beavers–Joseph–Saffman conditions. We prove existence of weak solutions and give a compl...

A parameter-free dynamic alternative to hyper-viscosity for coupled transport equations: Application to the simulation of 3D squall lines using spectral elements

The stabilization of high order spectral elements to solve the transport equations for tracers in the atmosphere remains an active topic of research among atmospheric modelers. This paper builds on our previous work on variational multiscale stabilization (VMS) and discontinuity capturing (DC) [Variational multiscale stabilization of high-order spectral elements for the advection-diffusion equa...

AIAA 2002-3124 The DG/VMS Method for Unified Turbulence Simulation

The high cost of wind tunnel testing and the ongoing reduction in national wind tunnel facilities are forcing the aerospace engineering community to increasingly rely on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to predict the performance of new aircraft designs. However, most aerospace applications are characterized by flows that exhibit large-scale unsteady turbulence and the accurate prediction of ...

A finite element variational multiscale method for incompressible flow

In this article, we present a finite element variational multiscale (VMS) method for incompressible flows based on two local Gauss integrations, and compare it with common VMS method which is defined by a low order finite element space Lh on the same grid as Xh for the velocity deformation tensor and a stabilization parameter a. The best algorithmic feature of our method is using two local Gaus...
